스포츠에서 쓰는 단어를 이용한, 일상에서의 표현을 알아보자.


1) To make a great pitch.

Definition : To try to persuade people to support you or give you something.

Example : The salesman made a great pitch so I decided to buy the new cell phone.


2) To throw in the towel.

Definition : To surrender, admit defeat.

Example : I decided to throw in the towel after I realized I couldn't win the contract.


3) To play it safe.

Definition : To be careful and avoid any risk.

Example : It'll be difficult to find a girlfriend/boyfriend if you always play it safe.


4) To give it one's best shot.

Definition : To put forth your best effort.

Example : Whether you pass or fail the exam, you should give it your best shot.


5) To beat someone to the punch.

Definition : To make decisive move in a situation.

Example : If we don't get this product to the market, our competitors will beat us to the punch.


6) To give (or be given) the boot.

Definition : To be let go from an organization.

Example : Steve Jobs was given the boot from Apple in 1997.


7) To kick (an idea around).

Definition : To pass an idea person to person.

Example : Let's kick around a few ideas about this new problem we are facing.


8) Knock yourself out.

Definition : Used to give permission to someone to do something.

Example : [A] Do you mind if I have some of your chips and salsa? [B] Knock yourself out.


9) Ballpark figure.

Definition : Rough estimate.

Example : I need a ballpark figure of how much the project will cost.


10) Get the ball rolling.

Definition : To get something started.

Example : If we don't get the ball rolling, we will never finish this research project on time.


11) The ball's in one's court.

Definition : To have to do something before any progress can be made in a situation.

Example : The ball's in your court since I already gave you my sales pitch.


12) To be saved by the ball.

Definition : To be saved from misfortune or unpleasantness by something.

Example : Chile's General Augusto Pinochet was saved by the ball of old age before facing charges in court.


13) No holds barred.

Definition : With all restrictions relaxed.

Example : The negotiations between South Korea and China were rough, no holds barred.


14) To jockey (for position).

Definition : To put yourself into a good position to win something.

Example : If you want a promotion, you should jockey yourself for position within the company.
